 Fresh Documentary Analysis

The documentary Fresh was filmed in 2009 and aims to educate consumers about how food is produced in modern times. It interviews various stakeholders and critically views contemporary American agricultural practices. It is intended to appeal to an audience concerned about healthy living and the environment.

The documentary starts by interviewing a corn and soybean farmer in rural Iowa. He complained that the soybean and corn growing reduces the diversity in agriculture and that he is growing it primarily because of its demand. The farmer from Iowa, George Naylor, also said he had not used pesticides before, and the focus was predominantly on corn and soybeans. Naylor said, "So long as you are just going to rely on a couple crops and you plant them year after year, you are creating an environment where weeds, bugs will become prevalent, and pesticides and herbicides resistance to them build over" (Fresh Documentary 00:08:14). The situation in Iowa mirrors challenges faced in modern agriculture even with increased efficiency and economies of scale it has tradeoff taking its toll on farmers and the environment. The focus on the environmental consequences of modern farming appeals to an audience that is concerned about the environment and the diversity of crops

Due to modern agriculture, they also mentioned the growing health risks related to feedlots and meat production. Feedlots have gotten attention due to animal welfare concerns, but their impact on public health is often overlooked. Author Micheal Pollan stated, "Once we concentrate animals into these animal cities that we call feedlots, you have all sorts of problems, not only miserable animals but microbes like E-Coli 0157H7, which is a feedlot bacteria, and it regularly killed people" (Fresh Documentary 00:11:41). The documentary mention of bacteria that is a result of feedlots appeals to an audience who is health concerned and wants to seek out healthier food and is concerned about the spread of disease.

The documentary aims to appeal to an audience concerned about public health and the environment. It archives those objectives by mentioning the negative consequences of feedlots on public health by increasing the risk of disease, which helps spread awareness of the problem. It focuses on the environment by highlighting the negative impacts of pesticides. The documentary aims to spread awareness about the negative consequences on the environment and public health that modern agriculture brings.
